Early Employees

Like many firms of the time and indeed later, the firm appears to have either ‘encouraged’ or probably more accurately ‘didn’t discourage’ employees from staying with them for most of their working life. Similarly, they were not adverse from employing several members from the same family. This may have been because the firm was essentially a family run concern.

As part of the centenary celebrations in 1958, the firm produced an unpublished account of their one-hundred-year history. Within the book numerous references are made to long serving employees, some of whom began with the firm when Thomas Messenger ran the business.
