If known at all, the firm of Messenger & Co., Ltd. is probably best known for its bespoke horticultural and associated structures; whether it is elaborate conservatories, vineries, ferneries, plant-, orchid-, peach-, forcing- and fig-houses.

Accompanying these structures, the firm offered a complete installation and fitting out service including heating systems, fountains, plant stands, staging, wiring, and associated fixtures, thereby essentially providing the client with a one-stop shop. The same heating systems were also marketed for use in factories, churches, chapels, schools, domestic residences, etc.; a side of the business that was to flourish and be extremely important to the firm particularly after the First World War, when demand for elaborate horticultural structures weakened.
