Vanes and Finials

45ft. long greenhouse range with 4 No. 4 Finials, built for W.H. Cotton, Ivydene, Earl Shilton, Hinckley, Leicestershire.

Vanes and finials are typically decorative devices which in the greenhouse/conservatory environment are normally located in a prominent position, such as the end of a roofline or above a porch entrance. They are intended to be both seen and admired; whilst not an uncommon accompaniment to a conservatory or greenhouse they normally only adorn the more ‘upmarket’ or ‘expensive’ models. The choice of installing one or more vanes and finials was obviously the choice of the customer, with the firm offering around 13 different models from the rather plane to the extremely ornate. Whilst the finial is purely decorative, the weather vane combines the decorative with the practical. Where located at the end of a roofline, they were often accompanied with a row of creating, particularly adorning conservatories.

96ft. long conservatory built in 1908 for Bradford Corporation at Bradford Moor Park, with 2 No. 0 vanes and 2 No. 3 finials.
